Why is finding a soul mate so hard?

Anais Nin said "we have been poisoned by fairy tales."

"Soul mate" is a romantic notion that contributes to us developing unrealistic expectations.

There are many many wonderful people out there who would make a great significant other, after which you really have to work on yourself and your own baggage to make the relationship something worthy of a romance novel.

Soul mates are not found. They are created.

Grandchildren

His whole life my dad dreamed of grandchildren. By the time his first was born he already had early symptoms of dementia.
He would have been more present had he not been busy desperately fighting to not come undone.
I remember you healthy: powerful, supportive, dictatorial
I remember you sick: repetitive, disoriented, lonely.
I loved you just the same.
I remember you in your entirety.
I remember you.

The perfect family.

Boyfriend, my niece, my nephew and I are standing in line for ice cream. We've had a full day so everyone is subdued. I lean over and give Boyfriend a smooch.

A woman walks up to me.

"I admire you so much" she says. "You have the most beautiful family. Your kids are so well behaved. You and your husband look blissful. Please tell me your secret."

"Well" I say. "This man here is not my husband. And these are not my kids. We just borrowed them."

"OH THANK GOD" she says and walks away.

The perfect family. It doesn't exist.

Introvert at work

My Picture Polish!

Today is a special day: it's My Picture Polish day!

If you've visited just about any nail blog in the last couple of years, you know that piCture pOlish is the best of the best in the indie polish world. They make gorgeous polishes, of course, and they do an amazing job of connecting with bloggers and getting to know the people who love their polishes.

One of the company's latest initiatives was My Picture Polish, where bloggers showed off their piCture pOlish collections on Instagram and some were asked to swatch and review new (to them) shades to grow their collections even more. I was lucky enough to be chosen for My Picture Polish, and today I have my swatches to share with you!

First up is Paris, the color I asked to be included in my swatch package (we got one polish of our choice and two surprise selections). Paris is a beautiful coral shade with a delicate scatter holo and jelly-like application.

I'm not sure what specifically about Paris inspired this polish, but I've admired it since its release earlier this year and was thrilled to finally get to try it. In spite of it's semi-sheer consistency, it covers really well in two normal coats and shows off the sparkle of the holo to gorgeous effect.

Next is Aphrodisiac, an intense, dark metallic purple that really brings the drama. I knew when I saw the bottle that this one would be stunning when worn, and as you can see, I was right! I only wish my pictures did it better justice—it looks almost black here, but in person, it's unmistakably purple.

The formula on Aphrodisiac is really impressive: if you wanted to, I think you could probably get away with just one coat. That's how well it covers! I went with two for my swatches, since bright lights and close-ups can reveal every little flaw, but that second coat was just for insurance. I suspect this polish would also stamp super well and I can't wait to give that a shot.

Finally, we have Voodoo. I don't quite know how to describe this polish: a deep, shimmery brown-purple cream, maybe? It looks coppery-gold in the bottle, the first coat leans very plummy, and the second coat develops into a rich, warm, earthy brown.

I didn't expect Voodoo to be my favorite of the three when I first saw my selection, but after swatching, it definitely is. The depth is just so incredible that I find myself wanting to stare at it forever. This is going to be an amazing polish for the fall and I can't wait to wear it a ton.

And... that's it! Thank you so much to piCture pOlish for including me in the My Picture Polish initiative—it's always an honor to work with them. You can find piCture pOlish online at their website, on Instagram, on YouTube, and with their network of international stockists. You truly can't go wrong with any of their polishes, so if you've never tried one, you really should start now!

Diamond

Boyfriend is meeting my dad for the first time. They’re drinking from a bottle of Japanese Whiskey Boyfriend purveyed for the occasion.

Boyfriend: What was it like to raise four kids?
Dad: They get sick and argue and don’t come home when they say they will and you worry constantly. It’s not for the faint of heart.
Boyfriend: Tell me about Dushka. What was she like?
“Andrew.” My Dad says, eyes shining. “Dushka was perfect”.

My Dad died 8 months ago today. While the world reminds me daily of my flaws and shortcomings, this is the diamond – resplendent, indestructible - my father left lodged in the center of my heart.

Sit

Setting: early evening. Crowded bus.

A woman sitting turns to a guy standing.
Her: Excuse me, would you like to sit here?
Him: Whah? Oh, no thank you.
Her: I figured you could take my seat and I could sit on your lap.
They regard each other for a second.
Him: Sure.

I learn so much taking public transport.

Go for it

While I understand there is virtue in patience I don’t think it’s necessarily true that good things come to those who wait. Good things come to those who go for it.

Nail Art: A Pluto Perspective

All the excitement about Pluto recently inspired me to try something space-related on my nails. Galaxy designs are fun and I've done a couple of them, but I wanted to do something new this time. After some brainstorming (and perusing lots of NASA's new high-res pictures of Pluto), I decided: what about trying to recreate the surface of a planet on my nails?

And just like that, these Pluto/moonscape nails were born. We know now that Pluto is actually more of a reddish color, so this look was mostly inspired by the black and white photos, as well as my slight obsession with grey. This design also kind of reminds me of certain photos of Earth's moon, so if the color is a deal-breaker for the Pluto inspiration, we can just go with the generic moonscape idea here, too.

I started with a base of OPI Cement the Deal and then dabbed on some NARS Galathee with a little ball of cling wrap to give it some texture. When all that was dry, I did a quick hairspray water marble using piCture pOlish LakoDom to add the sparkly, crackling effect on the surface.

To say that I like how these turned out is something of an understatement: I wore them for literally two weeks before finally breaking down and changing them. Grey is just such a favorite for me, and I loved the space tie-in, so every time I thought about making a change, I couldn't bring myself to do it. (It also didn't help that everything held up extremely well and hardly chipped at all for two weeks—one of the unlikely downsides to a really good base coat, I guess!)

Now that I've (sort of) done the surface of one planet on my nails, I'm super intrigued to take a stab at some of the others. Some Saturn nails would be pretty amazing, don't you think?

Thanks for looking!

No plans

Confessions of a closet introvert:
Barista: do you have any awesome plans for the weekend?
Me: YES.
Barista: What will you be doing?
Me: Nothing.

Tres Leche Cake

Tres Leche 1

Ingredients:

All purpose flour --   1 cup
Baking Powder      --   1½ tsp
Salt                             --   ¼ tsp
Eggs                           --   5 , separated
Sugar                        --   1 cup(for cake)  + 3 tbsp for icing
Vanilla                     --   1 tsp
Milk                           --   1/3 cup
Evaporated Milk  --   1 can
Sweetened Condensed Milk --   1 can
Heavy Cream         --   ¼ cup + 1 pint for icing

Tres Leche 3

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a 9 x 13 inch pan coating well with butter / spray. I used an 8 inch pan which was 2" deep.

Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Beat egg yolks with ¾ cup sugar on high speed until yolks are pale yellow. Stir in milk and vanilla.Pour egg yolk mixture over the flour mixture and stir very gently until combined.

Beat egg whites on high speed until soft peaks form. Add ¼ cup sugar and beat until egg whites are stiff but not dry.

Fold in the egg white mixture into the batter until just combined.

Pour into prepared pan and bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let it cool.

Mix condensed milk, evaporated milk, and ¼ cup heavy cream.

Tres Leche

Pierce the surface of the cool cake with a fork. Slowly drizzle the milk mixture. Try to get as much around the edges of the cake as you can.

Let the cake absorb the milk mixture. I prefer it to be chilled - keep in the refrigerator

Whip the remaining heavy cream with sugar until thick and spread it over the cake. Cut into squares and enjoy !!!

Defying Stephen King

I walked into class on my first day of college feeling edgy and disoriented to find Carla sitting on the other side of the room, under the window. She looked right at me and flashed me a smile. More than feeling like she was greeting a stranger I felt like she was recognizing someone she had always known and was happy to see. I walked over and sat next to her.

Her company was easy; she laughed often and loudly. We defined loyalty similarly, and agreed on what we felt was most important, even as that evolved. From that day, she set up permanent residence in my heart and now, 25 years later, still firmly holds the title of Best Friend.

“I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12”, wrote Stephen King in Stand by Me. I asked my Dad if this could possibly be true. He nodded. “Life gets in the way” he said. “You have less time and other priorities.”

I won’t be that kind of adult, I vowed. I don’t want to ever become a person who feels she doesn’t have time for friends.

And then I got busy.

I got picky too. Arriving at a restaurant on time or an ability to make and stick to agreed upon commitments became a critical requirement. If I didn’t have time, I definitely did not have time for flaky.

In my late twenties and thirties my life revolved around moving to a new country, working in a demanding, full time job that involved building teams, and being a good wife. I didn’t have time for much else.

And then I got a divorce.

I told my friend Amit that the hardest thing as a single woman in her 40s was opening my eyes after the alarm went off and determining in those first seconds how I was going to get through the day. He proceeded to call me every morning at 7:00.

I was vexed to realize that I had somehow bought into the notion that I didn’t have time, that I had more important things to do, that friends were not a priority. If you tell yourself “it’s too hard”, that becomes reality. In other words, I voluntarily closed myself off to one of the most enriching, heart-filling, affirming parts of life.

My friend Andrea said it best: “friends, like sleep, are an essential yet undervalued aspect of our existence.”

And then my Dad got sick – fatally sick – and he didn’t have many friends come by to see him. The end of his life forced me to more carefully evaluate what I was doing with mine.

I think every day about defying Stephen King. I try to be open to the delicate serendipity of making new friends. I remind myself to embrace people for exactly who they are and watch with wonder how they show up their way, not mine.

I also go out of my way to spend time with all the friends I made back when it felt like love, back when I saw my best friend Carla’s big eyes in the light of that window. Back when the two of us spent whole afternoons hanging out on the couch laughing without it ever occurring to either of us it would one day be necessary to make more elaborate plans.
